Measuring RAPCO Vacuum Pump Wear  
 

Using the Rapco, Inc. S.M.A.R.T. STICK

 
     
  If You Are using a RAPCO S.M.A.R.T. Stick  
  1.  Push sleeve all the way to the shoulder (Worn area).
2.  Remove cap screw from pump.
3.  Make sure Magnetos are off
4.  Rotate prop slowly and look into hole with flashlight to lineup
     vane with hole.
5.  Insert smart stick to verify alignment
6.  Remove smart stick from pump.
7.  Push sleeve down until about 1/4 inch from tip.
8.  Push smart stick in slowly until it stops.
9.  Make sure wear sleeve is touching pump
10. Pull it out of the pump and Read position of the wear sleeve
11. Compare to diagram below
12. Install cap screw and washer (MS35338-43) and torque to 14 in.-lbs.

  This procedure should be performed after 500 hours total time on the pump, or in accordance with aircraft manufacturer recommendations. After the initial inspection, the pump should be re-inspected at every annual inspection or 100 hours

  ** SEE BELOW FOR ALTERNATE MEASURING TECHNIQUE  **  
     
  Measuring WITHOUT the Rapco, Inc  
  S.M.A.R.T. STICK: 200 & 400 Series  
     
  1.  Remove inspection port cap screw.
2.  Align inspection port with hole by turning shaft.
     Use flashlight to assist.
3.  Insert probe, (A) such as small straw or toothpick.  Make sure it comes in
     contact with the worn vane, not with rotor.  Make sure you are NOT
     measuring from the outside of the cavity, and you ARE measuring from
     where the screw head touched the cavity (recessed area) see figure 2.
4.  Mark probe at the point it comes in contact with the seal of the inspection
     port.  See figure 2.
5.  Remove probe and measure the depth of which it was inserted.  This depth
    should not exceed 11/16" or .687".
6.  Reinstall cap screw and washer (MS35338-43) and torque to 14 In. Lbs.

No other measuring device supplied by any other
manufacturer is acceptable.

  Please note: RAPCO pumps can only be measured using either of the two above techniques.  Other pump manufacturers measuring devices do not work and should not be used on a RAPCO pump.
